Business Objectives

The state of Oregon is reinventing itself online. Oregon´s online presence has been overlooked for too long. This makes it harder to tell visitors what we as a state have to offer them and to tell you what we as government can do for you.

Create a Single State of Oregon Government Identity Online
The first step in creating a better online presence is creating a single "look-and-feel" for all state Web pages. Oregon.gov has been a collection of links to Web pages that show little in common. No sense of government unity was shown. Agency Web pages often did not link to other agencies.

The new Web page design has changed this. When you visit a state Web site, all agencies will have the same graphics and colors. As a result, you know that you are getting state information and using state services. It´s also easier to move from one state agency to another.

We have worked very hard to make our new Web design ADA 508 compliant. Visitors with disabilities will find using the site much easier.

Promote Digital Government
The second step is providing you with a reason to visit Oregon.gov. If you don´t visit our Web sites, then we haven´t improved our online presence.

Provide More Services Online

You need more government services daily. Providing these services online is a great way to meet your needs. You spend less time doing business with the government and more time on things you really want to do.

Online services lower the cost of doing business for the state. Electronic processing of transactions is faster than doing them by hand. And human errors are less likely to happen. Faster and more accurate processing improves agency efficiency. This allows agencies to spend more time dealing with your needs that can´t be met online.

Make Finding Government Information Easier

You need government information on your schedule. And you need it to be up-to-date and reliable. Through the E-government program, we are providing 24-hour a day access to government information every day of the week. Keeping it up-to-date is now faster and easier than ever before.

We are making find this information easier. Under the old Oregon.gov, you often needed to know which agency could answer your question before you could go online. Or you would drive from office to office to find an answer. Now you don´t. Just type a few words into our search engine and let it do the work. You can rely on the system to look through the state Web sites for your search terms and to find the Web sites most likely to be the right answer. No more frustration of getting back thousands of items that don´t have any relevance to your question.

Save the State of Oregon Money
Governments are under increased pressure to manage taxpayer dollars more carefully. In general, this means providing more services at a lower cost. The E-government program uses the technology of the Internet to help Oregon meet this goal.

The E-government program provides the means to consolidate hardware and software used to create and update state Web sites. This reduces our licensing fees and makes it easier for the state to maintain its Web sites. We are also reducing the need for 70+ individual platforms into one. With the flexibility provided by Web-based languages, application development only has to be done once. Then every agency can use it.

The state of Oregon will be using an Intranet to store documents, reports, and other materials. This central location will make this information available to all agencies. Staff members won´t need to know who developed the material to be able to use it. By typing a few words into a search page, they will be able to find the information they need – reducing duplication of that work. This will free their time to work on vital projects.
